9 ASEAN Countries Where a Thai Licence Is Valid Without an International Driving Permit

Did you know that your Thai driver’s licence, if it’s a smart card with English details, can be used to drive in 9 ASEAN countries without the need for an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

Thanks to mutual agreements between member countries, cross-border driving has never been easier.

List of ASEAN countries that accept a Thai smart card licence

1. Laos
2. Vietnam
3. Cambodia
4. Myanmar
5. Malaysia
6. Indonesia
7. Brunei
8. The Philippines
9. Singapore

To be valid in these countries, your Thai driving licence must be the smart card type that clearly shows your personal details in English. Older-style licences or those without English may not be accepted, you'll need to upgrade before travelling.

Bringing your Thai-registered car abroad

If you're planning to drive your own car across borders, you can also apply for an English version of the number plate from the Department of Land Transport. This process must be done at the office where your vehicle is registered. Note that each country may have different requirements and rules for temporarily bringing in foreign vehicles.
