Toyota Motor Corporation revealed its latest addition to the Land Cruiser family, the Toyota Land Cruiser “FJ”, at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. Positioned as the smallest model in the Land Cruiser lineup, the FJ aims to combine accessibility, versatility, and the legendary Land Cruiser off-road capabilities.
According to Masahiko Maeda, Toyota’s Regional CEO for Asia, the Land Cruiser FJ was designed to be approachable for a wider audience while still delivering the trusted durability and off-road performance that Land Cruiser fans expect. The FJ is slated for release in Japan in mid-2026, with plans to launch in Thailand in the following year, produced locally to strengthen Toyota’s supply chain and expand its IMV project footprint.
Design and Features
The FJ carries forward Land Cruiser’s signature boxy silhouette while integrating modern design elements. Its squared-off body emphasizes cabin space and cargo capacity while offering a visually robust and agile look. Key exterior highlights include:
- Detachable front and rear bumpers for easier repairs and customization
- Angled corners and squared edges conveying strength and adventure
- Enhanced off-road geometry with increased underbody reinforcement
Inside, the FJ blends classic Land Cruiser ruggedness with modern technology. A horizontal dashboard improves visibility and accessibility, and controls are ergonomically positioned for off-road and urban driving. Additional interior features:
- Clear front visibility with a low-mounted engine cover
- Intuitive gear lever and switch layout
- Advanced driver assistance via Toyota Safety Sense, including Pre-Collision Safety System
The FJ is built on a platform derived from Toyota’s IMV pickup trucks, providing an optimal ground clearance, short wheelbase, and excellent maneuverability (minimum turning radius: 5.5 meters). Enhanced underbody reinforcements and chassis rigidity ensure stability both on and off-road.
Powertrain
The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is equipped with a 2.7-litre 2TR-FE petrol engine, delivering 163 hp and 246 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed Super ECT automatic transmission and a part-time 4WD system. This setup balances daily usability with rugged off-road capability.
Brand Promise
Toyota positions the FJ as a vehicle that delivers “Freedom & Joy”, reflecting the adventurous Land Cruiser spirit in a smaller, more accessible package. With customizable options planned throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle, the FJ aims to offer both practicality and personalized driving experiences for global customers.
