BYD Triumphs as UK’s #1 Best-Selling EV brand among private buyers

BYD has achieved a historic milestone in the United Kingdom, emerging as the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) brand for private buyers in 2026.

According to recent data, the brand recorded 12,754 battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations year-to-date, capturing over 7% of the total EV market. 

Notably, BYD surpassed established industry giants including Tesla, Kia, BMW, and Volkswagen, despite its vehicles being excluded from the UK Government’s current electric car grant scheme. When factoring in its highly efficient DM-i (Plug-in Hybrid) range, BYD’s total New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sales reached a staggering 26,396 units, commanding a 9.5% share of the UK market.

The DM-i Factor: Driving the Transition

BYD’s strategic focus on its Dual Mode intelligent (DM-i) hybrid technology has been a key driver of its success. In the UK, the lineup currently features three DM-i models: the SEAL U (SEALION 6), SEAL 6, and SEALION 5. This mirrors BYD Thailand’s recent expansion, which saw the debut of the SEALION 5 DM-i in March 2026 to overwhelming response.

Mr Bono Ge, BYD UK Country Manager, highlighted the shift in consumer behaviour:

"With fuel prices remaining volatile, drivers are increasingly seeking the economic advantages of electrification. We are thrilled to see the UK EV market grow by 22% year-on-year, and we are incredibly proud that BYD has become the nation’s leading EV brand in just over three years."

Mr Ge further emphasised that BYD’s mission extends beyond manufacturing cars. The brand is focused on an all-encompassing energy ecosystem:

  • V2G Solutions: Empowering customers to manage energy and reduce costs through Vehicle-to-Grid technology.
  • Energy Storage: Deploying home and utility-scale solutions to support a greener grid.
  • Flash Charging: Preparing to launch revolutionary technology capable of charging from 10% to 97% in just 9 minutes.

The UK EV market’s 22% growth reflects a definitive shift towards sustainable mobility. BYD’s rise to the top signals that the combination of cutting-edge innovation, reliability, and competitive pricing is precisely what modern consumers are looking for as they move away from fossil fuels.
