After the Geely Panda Mini made its initial debut in early 2023 to compete with market leaders such as the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, Chery QQ Ice Cream, and Changan Lumin, Geely has recently launched the updated Panda Mini Karting Edition. The revised strategy highlights a sporty design to attract younger consumers. The main highlight remains the powertrain upgrade, shifting to a battery from the world-leading manufacturer CATL, which enhances both safety confidence and practical efficiency tailored for city life.

Highlights of the Panda Mini Karting Edition

  • Exterior Design: Features all-around custom trim, including a front skirt and a large rear spoiler. Although these are primarily aesthetic enhancements (given the top speed of 100 km/h), they effectively cater to the preferences of young Chinese consumers. It comes in 5 body colours: Orange, Black, Grey, White, and Pink.
  • CATL Battery Upgrade: Replaced the previous battery from Gotion with a 17.2 kWh LFP battery from CATL. It has passed 76 rigorous safety tests, delivering a maximum driving range of 210 km per full charge (CLTC standard) or approximately 172 km (WLTP standard).
  • Charging System: Supports fast charging up to 22 kW, enabling the battery to charge from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes.

Opportunity for ThailandThe market trend for micro-EVs in the 300,000–400,000 THB price range is opening up more space in Thailand, particularly among young professionals and university students seeking their first car for city commuting. If Geely Thailand decides to introduce the Panda Mini Karting at a price point under 350,000–400,000 THB, it will certainly become a formidable competitor to both conventional city cars and internal combustion eco-cars. We will need to keep a close eye on Geely's strategy to see if they tap into this emerging market segment in the future.
