Ever heard that? It's not accurate to say there's a specific braking distance you must hit. Sometimes, if you can't brake in time, accidents can happen.

We might have seen accidents on the road many times where vehicles follow too closely, resulting in insufficient braking distance and rear-end collisions in the end.

Let's take a closer look. If driving at this speed, approximately how much distance should be maintained from the vehicle in front for you to brake safely?

  •  At a speed of 40 km/h, the minimum braking distance is 18 metres
  • At a speed of 60 km/h, the minimum braking distance is 34 metres

*If the braking is not in time and an accident occurs, the impact force is equivalent to falling from an 8-storey building, leading to severe injuries or even fatalities.

  • At a speed of 80 km/h, the minimum braking distance is 54 metres
  • At a speed of 90 km/h, the minimum braking distance is 66 metres
  • At a speed of 100 km/h, the minimum braking distance is 80 metres

*If the braking is not in time and an accident occurs, the impact force is equivalent to falling from a 20-storey building, with a high risk of fatality.

*When driving in wet road conditions, you should multiply the braking distance by 2

Speed limits in urban areas/communities:
  • Cars: Should drive at a speed not exceeding 45 km/h and maintain a distance of about 15-20 metres from the front vehicle
  • Motorcycles: Should drive at a speed not exceeding 60 km/h.
Speed limits for driving outside urban areas:
  • Cars: Should drive at a speed not exceeding 90 km/h and maintain a distance of about 40-50 metres from the front vehicle
  • Motorcycles: Should drive at a speed not exceeding 70 km/h.
