Car Hood Won’t Open? Here's What to Do!

Whether it’s the front engine hood or the rear trunk lid, being unable to open the hood is frustrating.

Especially if you need to check the engine or grab your belongings. A stuck car hood can result from several mechanical or environmental issues. Here's how to diagnose and fix it!

Common Reasons the Hood Gets Stuck

1. Broken or Disconnected Release Cable

The cable connecting the hood release lever inside the car to the latch may snap or come loose, making it impossible to release the hood.

2. Rusty or Jammed Latch Mechanism

If the latch hasn't been opened in a while—especially in humid conditions—it can seize up due to rust or dirt buildup.

3. Damaged Release Mechanism or Spring

The spring that helps pop the hood open might be damaged or loose, preventing the hood from lifting even after pulling the lever.

4. Misaligned or Bent Hood After Collision

Even a minor fender bender can cause hood misalignment, leading to it getting jammed or stuck shut.

Quick Fixes to Try When the Hood Won’t Open

1. Pull the Release Lever While Someone Presses or Lifts the Hood

Have one person pull the hood release lever inside the cabin while another gently lifts or presses on the hood from outside. This can help if the latch is slightly stuck.

2. Tap Around the Latch Area

Use a rubber mallet or the palm of your hand to lightly tap the area where the latch is located. This might help free a stuck latch if it's slightly corroded or jammed.

3. Inspect the Release Cable Inside the Car

Remove the lower dash panel to see if the cable is still attached to the lever. If it’s disconnected or frayed, you might be able to pull the cable manually with pliers.

4. Spray Lubricant on the Latch (If Accessible)

If you can partially open the hood, spray a lubricant (like WD-40) on the latch to help loosen the mechanism and prevent future sticking.

What If You Still Can’t Open the Hood?

If none of the above methods work, it’s best to visit a mechanic. Forcing the hood open can cause further damage to the latch or the hood itself. Let a professional inspect the problem—especially if you need urgent access to the battery or engine components!
