Why Is There Water Dripping After Parking? Here’s What’s Normal and What’s Not

Have you ever parked your car and noticed water dripping underneath?

It might leave you wondering: Is something wrong with my car? The truth is not all drips are bad, but some could be signs of a more serious issue. Let’s break down the most common sources of water under your car and what they really mean.

1. Air Conditioning Drip – Totally Normal

Clear, odourless water under your car? That’s likely just condensation from the air conditioning system. This is very common, especially after using the A/C for a long drive. Nothing to worry about here.

2. Radiator or Coolant Leak – Warning Sign!

If the dripping fluid has a colour — green, pink, or even rusty orange — it might be coolant leaking from the radiator or overflow tank. This often happens if there's a crack, a pressure issue, or overheating while the car is parked. Immediate inspection is recommended.

3. Exhaust Pipe Drip – Sometimes Fine, Sometimes Not

Water dripping from the exhaust is often harmless. It's caused by condensation or normal combustion by-products, especially in cooler weather. However, if you also notice white or bluish smoke, it could be a sign of a blown head gasket or coolant leakage into the engine — definitely not normal.

4. Oil or Other Fluids – A Big Red Flag!

If what’s dripping isn’t water but feels greasy — like engine oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, or power steering fluid — that’s a problem. These leaks could affect your car’s performance and safety, and should be dealt with immediately.
