Toyota Yaris ATIV HEV driving on the roadIf you need an everyday car for the daily commute—easy to drive, fuss-free, and remarkably frugal on petrol—Motorist recommends Toyota's latest hybrid sedan: the “Yaris ATIV HEV”.

Serving as the quintessential first car for aspirational buyers, the latest Toyota Yaris ATIV finally introduces a petrol-electric hybrid setup shared with the popular Yaris Cross. Behind the wheel, it delivers an immediately familiar driving character, refined further for the 2026 model year.

In sleek four-door sedan form, urban maneuverability is vastly improved over crossover rivals. Better aerodynamic efficiency noticeably cuts down wind buffeting at highway speeds while bolstering fuel economy figures.

Above all, it remains foolproof to operate: step in, press the start button, and set off. It isn't low-tech by any measure; rather, Toyota has retained that familiar, ergonomic layout so drivers of any generation can feel right at home within moments.

Front fascia design of Toyota Yaris ATIV HEVFront-end styling retains the familiar visage of the standard 1.2-litre Yaris ATIV, whilst the sporty GR Sport trim receives an aggressive bespoke GR front grille pattern.

Even on our tested standard HEV Premium model, convenience and safety kit is lavish: front and rear parking sensors come standard alongside the full suite of Toyota Safety Sense active driver aids.

Hybrid engine under the bonnet of Toyota Yaris ATIV HEVPower comes from a 1.5-litre Full Hybrid system producing a combined 111 PS, mated to an e-CVT gearbox driving the front wheels and backed by a compact Lithium-ion battery pack.

Under the bonnet, a 1,496 cc 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve petrol engine (code 2NR-VEX) with Dual VVT-i delivers 91 PS at 5,500 rpm and 121 Nm of torque, compatible with E20 fuel—an economical pairing given today's forecourt fuel prices.

The headline achievement of this powertrain is efficiency: delivering an astonishing claimed fuel economy of up to 29.4 km/L (NEDC) on the HEV Premium trim, with CO2 emissions kept to a modest 77 g/km.

Side profile dimensions of Toyota Yaris ATIV HEVExterior dimensions measure 4,425 mm long, 1,740 mm wide, and 1,480 mm tall on the HEV Premium (extending to 4,440 mm on the GR Sport), built upon a 2,620 mm wheelbase.

While external dimensions push the upper limits of the B-segment, the 2,620 mm wheelbase leaves rear knee room somewhat tight for taller passengers. Fortunately, the front passenger and driver seats are supremely supportive and comfortable.

Urban handling is aided by a class-leading turning circle radius of just 4.8 metres—tighter than many compact city EVs and more agile than the GR Sport's 5.2-metre radius. A generous 160 mm ground clearance easily clears speed humps and sudden flash floods.

Alloy wheels and suspension of Toyota Yaris ATIV HEVSuspension tuning prioritises cushioned ride comfort around town, combining MacPherson Struts up front with a Torsion Beam rear axle that absorbs small bumps well, though sharp crests can unsettle the body slightly.

Front cabin dashboard of Toyota Yaris ATIV HEVThe cabin punches above its weight with a 9-inch touchscreen supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, upgraded for faster response times alongside an exclusive 6-speaker Pioneer sound system on HEV trims.

The ATIV HEV also features an Electronic Parking Brake with Auto Brake Hold, multi-colour ambient cabin illumination, and generous soft-touch padded surfaces across the dashboard and door cards.

Rear door cupholder placement on Toyota Yaris ATIVA thoughtful ergonomic touch: the rear door cupholders are positioned just beneath the interior door latches, allowing passengers to grab drinks without awkwardly bending down.

Sleek fastback rear styling of Toyota Yaris ATIV HEVThe rear styling tapers in a sleek fastback silhouette, looking remarkably sharp right out of the showroom without requiring any aftermarket aesthetic tweaks.

Deep rear boot luggage compartment of Toyota Yaris ATIVThanks to its elongated rear deck, boot space is surprisingly deep, providing a generous 475 litres of cargo capacity—comfortably eclipsing many city hatchbacks.

HEV badge detail on Toyota Yaris ATIVExternally, the sole tell-tale sign distinguishing the HEV model from standard petrol trims is the discrete HEV emblem affixed to the right rear tailgate.

Rear emblem and pricing summary of Toyota Yaris ATIV HEVThe Toyota Yaris ATIV HEV cements its place as a front-runner in Thailand's hybrid sedan market across two core variants:

  • Toyota Yaris ATIV HEV Premium: 729,000 THB
  • Toyota Yaris ATIV HEV GR SPORT: 779,000 THB

Author’s Note – While it lacks the taller ground stance of the Yaris Cross crossover, the Yaris ATIV HEV proves noticeably more agile and economical for urban driving. If you want a dependable, hassle-free hybrid that eliminates charging worries, the Yaris ATIV HEV will not disappoint.
