The electric sports car market is facing challenges as Audi has canceled the RS6 e-tron Avant project,

and Polestar has postponed the launch of its electric roadster, Polestar 6. The future of high-performance electric sports cars appears less certain.

Why Electric Sports Cars Are Still Struggling

Electric sports cars remain a tough sell because many driving enthusiasts still prefer the sound and vibration of internal combustion engines—experiences that EVs cannot fully replicate, even with artificial engine sounds.

In addition, many sports car buyers favor manual transmissions, which EVs typically do not offer. These factors are forcing automakers to rethink their electric sports car strategies.

Audi’s High-Performance Electric Wagon on Hold

Earlier this year, Audi launched the A6 e-tron and S6 e-tron sedans in the U.S., sold alongside gasoline-powered A6 models:

  • A6 e-tron (Single Motor): 375 hp

  • A6 e-tron Quattro (All-Wheel Drive): 456 hp

  • S6 e-tron: 543 hp

Rumors suggested that Audi would develop the RS6 e-tron Avant, potentially exceeding 800 hp with a 0–100 km/h time of just 3 seconds. However, Top Gear reported that Audi has officially canceled the RS6 e-tron due to insufficient market demand.

A spokesperson confirmed that Audi will focus on high-performance electric vehicles using the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture. Meanwhile, the RS6 will return as a gasoline-powered wagon in the 2026 generation, likely featuring a V8 engine with optional hybrid support.

Polestar Prioritizes SUVs Over Roadster

Swedish automaker Polestar has also postponed the launch of the Polestar 6, an electric roadster inspired by the O2 concept from 2022.

CEO Michael Lohscheller told Autocar that the company will focus on the Polestar 7 small SUV and the next-generation Polestar 2 before developing Polestar 6 further.

Although Polestar still plans to produce the Polestar 6 on the same platform as the Polestar 5 sedan, the expected launch may be delayed from 2028 to 2030 due to high pricing and limited production (Polestar 5 starts at around $135,000 USD, approximately 4.9 million THB).

The Polestar 7 and next-generation Polestar 2 are designed for mass-market sales, which are crucial as the brand has experienced delays with Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 SUVs in the U.S. and a significant sales decline in China. Polestar 7 aims to target younger buyers with a more affordable price point.
