As we enter 2026, Thailand’s automotive landscape is shifting with major changes in Excise Tax structures. However, for current car owners, the most pressing question is: "How much is my annual car tax this year, and can I still do it online?"
There is often confusion between the New Car Excise Tax (which affects car purchase prices) and the Annual Road Tax (which you pay every year). This guide clarifies the exact rates for 2026 and provides a step-by-step guide to renewing online.
1. 2026 Annual Car Tax Rates (Official DLT Rates)
For Annual Tax Renewal (Road Tax), the calculation methods largely remain the same for existing vehicles, but Electric Vehicles (EVs) have specific tables you need to know.
A. Private Cars (≤ 7 Seats) - License Plate: Black Text / White Background
Includes Sedans (Civic, Altis, City) and SUVs (CR-V, HR-V).
The tax is calculated based on Engine Size (cc):
| Engine Size (cc) | Tax Rate (THB/cc) | Calculation Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 - 600 cc | 0.50 THB | 600 x 0.5 = 300 THB |
| 601 - 1,800 cc | 1.50 THB | (1,200 x 1.5) + 300 = 2,100 THB (for a 1.6L car) |
| 1,801 cc + | 4.00 THB | Progressive rate applies |
- Discount for Older Cars:
- Age 6 years: 10% discount
- Age 7 years: 20% discount
- ... up to Age 10+ years: 50% discount
B. Electric Vehicles (EVs) - License Plate: Green/Blue
Includes BYD Atto 3, Tesla Model 3/Y, Neta V.
EV annual tax is based on Vehicle Weight, and rates are significantly lower than combustion engines.
- Standard EV Tax Rates (Private Car < 7 Seats):
- Weight 501 - 750 kg: 300 THB
- Weight 1,751 - 2,000 kg: 1,600 THB (Most common EV SUVs fall here)
- Weight 2,001 - 2,500 kg: 1,900 THB
- Important Note for 2026:EVs registered between Oct 2022 - Sep 2025 may still be eligible for an 80% reduction for one year. If your eligibility has expired, you will pay the "Standard Rate" above.
- Example (Standard Rate): A 1,800kg EV pays 1,600 THB.
- Example (Reduced Rate): A 1,800kg EV pays only 320 THB.
C. Pick-up Trucks (Private Use) - License Plate: Green Text
Includes Hilux Revo, Isuzu D-Max (Standard Cab / Smart Cab).
The tax is calculated based on Vehicle Weight.
- Weight 1,501 - 1,750 kg: 1,050 THB
- Weight 1,751 - 2,000 kg: 1,350 THB
- Note: 4-Door Pickups are classified as Private Cars (Category A) and taxed by cc.
