Geely has unveiled its latest hybrid breakthrough, the "i-HEV" technology, boasting a maximum efficiency of over 45 km/L. This new powertrain aims to go toe-to-toe with established Japanese hybrid giants.

The i-HEV Powerplant

Geely revealed that this new system reduces energy consumption by more than 10% through AI-integrated energy management. This strategic move aligns with a broader shift in the Chinese automotive market: moving away from the high costs of large EV batteries in favour of compact 1–2 kWh hybrid batteries.

Furthermore, Geely claims a world-leading thermal efficiency improvement of 48.4%—the highest for any mass-produced engine. With a total output of 230 kW, the system can propel a vehicle from 0 to 30 km/h in just 1.84 seconds, the fastest in its class. Under various driving conditions, the technology has reached a peak fuel economy of 45 km/L.

The Implementation

For 2026, Geely has confirmed two primary models to feature i-HEV technology: the Geely Preface (luxury mid-sized sedan) and the Geely Monjaro (full-size SUV). Both models will be packed with high-end features, including multi-screen displays, Flyme Auto OS with Huawei HiCar connectivity, Head-Up Displays (HUD), and ventilated massaging seats.

In terms of real-world efficiency, the Preface achieves 25.1 km/L (WLTC), while the Monjaro delivers 21 km/L—figures that directly rival the current standards set by Japanese manufacturers.

The Future

The landscape of automotive propulsion is shifting. Chinese giants like Geely, Chery, and Changan are now aggressively developing next-generation hybrid systems, with some aiming for targets as high as 40–50 km/L.

With Toyota currently leading the global hybrid market with over 4.4 million units sold, it is no surprise that Chinese manufacturers are pivoting towards this sector. It is a dual-purpose strategy: drastically reducing manufacturing costs whilst simultaneously seizing a larger share of the global hybrid pie.
