Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 has recently reclaimed the title of the "King of FWD" by shattering the Honda Civic Type R record at 7:44.523 at the legendary Nürburgring.

This figure not only makes it the fastest front-wheel drive car on this circuit but also the fastest production vehicle ever produced by Volkswagen... creating a new page of history in the high-performance compact segment. Under the driving of Benjamin Leuchter—Volkswagen's racing driver, test driver, and developer—it covered the 20.832-kilometre lap in only 7:44.523 minutes, edging out the Honda Civic Type R, which had held the position since 2023, by a mere 0.358 seconds.

325 hp Power and Track-Level Technology

This GTI 50th Anniversary edition was specifically tuned to break the record, featuring the following technical details:

  • Maximum power of 239 kW (325 hp)

  • Maximum torque of 420 Nm

  • Acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 270 km/h

  • Suspension lowered by 15 mm compared to the standard Golf, with the DCC (Adaptive Chassis Control) system installed as standard.

GTI Performance Package EDITION 50

The key to shattering the record lay in the additional tuning on top of the special features mentioned above, through the installation of a high-performance package which includes:

  • Re-tuning the suspension to be lowered by an additional 5 mm, totalling a 20 mm drop.

  • Adding a lightweight R-Performance exhaust system made from titanium.

  • Upgrading to 19-inch forged lightweight wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres (235/35 R19), which significantly enhance road grip.

Five Decades of GTI Legend

Dating back to 1976, the name GTI has been a symbol of accessible driving fun that remains practical for daily life. To date, Volkswagen has produced over 2.5 million units of the GTI family worldwide.

"The Golf GTI EDITION 50 is more than just an anniversary model; it is proof of how 50 years of technical expertise and passion can create peerless performance in the compact segment," said Benjamin Leuchter, Volkswagen test driver.

This achievement serves as the perfect farewell to the internal combustion engine era of the GTI, before the brand moves towards the BOOST 2030 strategy to become a sustainable electric vehicle brand in the future.
