mReview: JAECOO 5 EV – The ever-popular value EV has evolved for 2026

JAECOO 5 EV Review: Bidding farewell to Chinese CBU imports as 100% Thai local assembly begins, solidifying as Thailand's undisputed king of value EVs.
What’s Great?
- Muscular, chunky SUV dimensions at a sub-600,000 THB price point.
- Genuinely practical cargo storage solutions throughout the cabin and boot.
- Remains one of the best-equipped EVs in its class.
What’s Good?
- Unbeatable value for money remains intact across both CBU and new locally assembled CKD trims.
- 130 kW DC fast charging remains refreshingly quick despite the platform's maturity.
- Thai CKD models gain attractive equipment upgrades.
What’s Not Great?
- Soft, buoyant suspension setup causes noticeable body roll that might induce car sickness.
- Wheelbase and rear legroom feel somewhat tight by 2026 EV standards.
Earlier CBU Chinese imports offered up to 461 km of range (NEDC), whereas new Thai-built CKD models deliver an extended 480 km range (NEDC). Drivetrain components and behind-the-wheel driving dynamics remain unchanged.
Despite its rugged, premium off-road appearance, the JAECOO 5 EV is best suited for urban commutes—roughly a 70:30 split toward city driving. Being front-wheel drive, hardcore off-roading isn't advised, though a 174 mm ground clearance copes admirably with waterlogged Thai roads during monsoon season.
With its sizable BC-SUV footprint, the vehicle carries significant kerb weight, putting the suspension to work during frequent stop-start city driving and inducing a degree of floatiness. That said, smooth drivers who feather the 288 Nm throttle pedal will adapt to its driving style effortlessly.
Front-end design adopts a clean, minimalist horizontal layout to project stability and premium sophistication. Beneath its calm fascia lies a wealth of tech: front/rear sensors, fog lights, auto headlights, and a full ADAS safety suite across all trims.
Under-bonnet packaging is well managed. A 155 kW (211 hp) front-mounted electric motor sits beneath a 35-litre front trunk (frunk) storage compartment—spacious enough to comfortably swallow a large durian!
This added storage is made possible by its generous body dimensions. For 2026, Thai CKD models receive a battery upgrade: the top-spec JAECOO 5 EV ULTRA gains a 60.93 kWh LFP battery pack, pushing range to 480 km (NEDC)—translating to roughly 420+ km in real-world driving.
Meanwhile, the entry JAECOO 5 EV MAX+ uses a 50.6 kWh battery delivering up to 405 km range, catering clearly to city-focused commuters versus families needing extra touring range.
If you purchased the earlier CBU Long Range MAX+, there's no need for envy—its 58.9 kWh battery pack trails the 2026 CKD specification by a mere 20 km.
DC fast charging supports up to 130 kW across all models, replenishing 30% to 80% in 20 to 25 minutes—a notable jump over early production batches capped at 80 kW DC charging.
Dimensions measure an impressive 4,380 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,650 mm tall. In the sub-600,000 THB bracket, virtually no competitor matches the J5 EV for sheer cabin height and road presence.
That said, its 2,620 mm wheelbase feels slightly dated in 2026, where several compact 5-door electric hatchbacks now offer longer wheelbases and roomier rear legroom. Nonetheless, rear passenger space remains far superior to traditional Japanese ICE or HEV models.
Where the J5 EV truly shines is headroom: a tall, upright roofline creates a delightfully airy atmosphere that mitigates any claustrophobia, aided further by the Panoramic Glass Roof.
The interior undergoes the biggest update. Tested CBU imports featured a white cabin scheme, whereas 2026 Thai-assembled CKD models offer a choice between Cool Black or an exclusive Brown synthetic leather trim on the top ULTRA grade.
The dashboard embraces a buttonless layout, consolidating vehicle controls into a portrait 13.2-inch central touchscreen. While crisp and clear, managing settings requires glancing away from the road, which can occasionally be distracting.
A 8-inch LED driver display handles instrument cluster duties. While it lacks the fancy graphics of full LCD displays found in pricier rivals, it presents core driving information clearly enough.
Sleek styling extends to the rear profile, featuring a subtly sloped roofline and a tidy tailgate design. Equipment levels remain generous across all trims without compromise.
Rear equipment includes reversing sensors, rear ADAS functions, a hidden rear wiper tucked under the third brake light, and substantial 235/55 R18 tyres mounted to independent 4-wheel suspension to manage the motor's 288 Nm torque.
Base boot capacity stands at 480 litres, expanding to 1,284 litres with rear seats folded down—a distinct advantage of its SUV body size. Better yet, 2026 Thai CKD models gain a power tailgate as standard fitment from the base trim!
When it comes to value under 600,000 THB, the JAECOO 5 EV remains hard to beat. From 2026 onwards, Thai buyers can choose between two locally assembled CKD specifications:
- JAECOO 5 EV MAX+: 579,000 THB (50.6 kWh battery, 401 km range)
- JAECOO 5 EV ULTRA: 669,000 THB (60.93 kWh battery, 480 km range)
Author’s Note – Despite aggressive new rivals offering longer wheelbases, finding a compact EV that matches the JAECOO 5 EV's equipment list and body size at this price point remains remarkably tough. It's easy to see why it continues to enjoy a loyal following among Thai motorists.
