Know it to avoid fines! New traffic law fines effective from September 5, 2023

The new traffic laws in 2023 mean that both drivers and passengers can be fined. In some cases, the penalties have increased compared to previous years. Stay updated on the latest fine rates.

Cases
Penalty Rates

Driving without a licence or with an expired licence.


  • Imprisonment for not more than 1 month, a fine not exceeding 1,000 Baht, or both imprisonment and fine.
  • In case of not carrying a driver's licence, a fine not exceeding 2,000 Baht.
Not displaying licence plates.
Maximum fine of 2,000 Baht.
Child safety for children under 6 years old (car seat).
Mandatory to have a child safety seat for children under 6 years old. Failure to comply may result in a maximum fine of 2,000 Baht.
Driving the vehicle against the direction of road lane.
Maximum fine of 2,000 Baht.
Parking in a no-parking zone.
Maximum fine of 2,000 Baht.
Failure to yield to pedestrians at a crosswalk.
Maximum fine of 4,000 Baht.
Running a red light.
Maximum fine of 4,000 Baht.
Exceeding the speed limit.
Maximum fine of 4,000 Baht.
Not wearing a seatbelt.
Maximum fine of 2,000 Baht for both the driver and passengers.
Sitting in the bed of a pickup truck or in the tailgate.
  • Allowed to sit without wearing seatbelts, but the number of occupants should not exceed the safety limit
  • The driver must drive at the designated speed.
Not wearing a motorcycle helmet.
Maximum fine of 2,000 Baht for both the driver and pillion passenger.
Hit-and-run.
Imprisonment for not more than 3 months, a fine not exceeding 2,000 - 10,000 Baht, or both imprisonment and fine.
Drunk driving
  • Blood alcohol content exceeding 50 milligrams per litre while driving.
  • Blood alcohol content exceeding 20 milligrams per litre while driving, with violations as follows:
    • Driver under 20 years old.
    • Temporary licence holder (2-year provisional licence).
    • Driver with a licence of a different type that cannot substitute for another.
    • Driver with a cancelled or suspended licence or during a licence suspension period.
  • First offence: Imprisonment for not more than 1 year, a fine ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 Baht, or both imprisonment and fine. Also, a suspension of the driver's license for 6 months or revocation.
  • If there is a fatality: Imprisonment for not more than 3-10 years, a fine not exceeding 60,000 to 200,000 Baht, or revocation of the driver's licence.
Street racing.
  • Imprisonment for not more than 3 months, or a fine ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 Baht, or both imprisonment and fine.
  • When a group attempts to organise a race with 5 or more vehicles, even if the race hasn't taken place yet, it is considered an attempt, and penalties apply.
  • Modified or illegally tuned vehicles participating in races, demonstrating behaviour  indicating an intention to race.
  • Attempted street racing offence: Imprisonment for not more than 2 months, or a fine ranging from 3,333 to 6,666 Baht, or both imprisonment and fine.
  • Individuals organising, advertising, or inviting for street racing: Imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or a fine ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 Baht, or both imprisonment and fine.
  • Car modification shops involved in race preparation are considered supporters and may face imprisonment for not more than 2 months, or a fine ranging from 3,333 to 6,666 Baht, or both imprisonment and fine.
Driving over a puddle of water which splashes onto others.
Maximum fine of 10,000 Baht, maximum imprisonment of 3 months.
Driving over a dog.
Offence of animal cruelty: Imprisonment for not more than 2 years, a fine not exceeding 40,000 Baht, or both imprisonment and fine.
Blocking the path of an emergency or ambulance vehicle.
  • Fine not exceeding 500 Baht.
  • If the act directly results in injury to the occupants of the ambulance, leading to death or causing death intentionally (depending on the circumstances), the offender may face more severe charges.
  • If driving behind an emergency vehicle within a distance of less than 50 metres while it is performing its duty, a fine of 1,000 Baht applies.

Using a vehicle emitting gases, black smoke, or chemical particles exceeding standards.
Fine not exceeding 1,000 Baht.
Using an unstable and unsafe vehicle.
Fine of 500 Baht.
Using a vehicle with an engine producing excessive noise.
Fine of 1,000 Baht.
Blocking traffic.
Imprisonment for not more than 3 months, or a fine ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 Baht, or both imprisonment and fine.
Overtaking on the left without reasonable cause.
Fine ranging from 400 to 1,000 Baht.
Overtaking on the left while ascending a slope, going over a bridge, or on a curve without proper traffic signals.
Fine ranging from 400 to 1,000 Baht.
Disregarding traffic signals or signs.
Fine of 500 Baht.
Driving without headlights or using high beams when there is insufficient light to clearly see people, vehicles, or obstacles within a 150-metre range.
Fine of 1,000 Baht.
Incorrect use of turn signals.
Fine of 500 Baht.
Transporting goods that extend beyond the length of the vehicle without attaching a red flag at the end visible within a 150-metre range.
Fine of 1,000 Baht.
Failure to stop behind the line or stop at a distance less than 3 metres from a traffic officer.
Fine of 1,000 Baht.
