The countdown to New Year 2026 has begun! You’ve booked your hotels, packed your bags, and planned your route. But is your car ready for the journey?

Driving long distances in Thailand during the holidays involves heavy traffic, mountain roads, and unpredictable weather. A breakdown isn't just an inconvenience; it can ruin your entire holiday.

Here is the comprehensive 20-Point Checklist to ensure you and your family reach your destination safely.

Part 1: Under the Hood

These are the vitals. Check these when the engine is cold.

  1. Engine Oil: Pull the dipstick. The level should be between 'Min' and 'Max', and the oil shouldn't look like thick sludge.
  2. Coolant (Radiator): Crucial. Check the overflow tank. If it's low, top it up. Never open the radiator cap while hot!
  3. Brake Fluid: Ensure the level is full and the color is clear (not dark brown).
  4. Power Steering Fluid: If you have hydraulic steering, check the reservoir to ensure smooth turning.
  5. Windshield Washer Fluid: Top it up with clean water (and a little screen wash) for buggy highway drives.
  6. Battery Health: Check for corrosion on terminals. If the battery is >2 years old, get a voltage check.
  7. Drive Belts: Press on the belts. They should be tight and have no cracks or fraying edges.
  8. Air Filter: A clean filter improves fuel economy. Shake out the dust or replace it if it's black.
Part 2: Tires & Brakes
  1. Tire Pressure: Inflate to the manufacturer’s spec (usually on the driver’s door jamb). Add 2-3 PSI extra if you are carrying a full car of passengers and luggage.
  2. Tire Tread: Depth must be at least 3mm. Look for bald spots or cracks in the sidewall.
  3. Spare Tire: Don't forget this! Check its pressure. A flat spare tire is useless in an emergency.
  4. Brake Pads: Listen for squeaking sounds and check if the brake pedal feels "spongy."
  5. Wheel Nuts: Ensure they are tightened properly (especially if you recently changed tires).
Part 3: Lights & Visibility
  1. Headlights (Low/High Beam): Ensure both bulbs work and lenses aren't foggy.
  2. Tail Lights & Brake Lights: Ask a friend to stand behind the car while you press the brakes.
  3. Turn Signals & Hazards: Crucial for communicating on the highway.
  4. Wiper Blades: If they streak or make noise, replace them. You need clear vision if it rains.
Part 4: Emergency & Documents
  1. Dashboard Warning Lights: Turn on the ignition. If the "Check Engine," "ABS," or "Airbag" light stays on, visit a mechanic immediately.
  2. Dash Cam: Format the memory card to ensure you have space to record the trip. Check that the date/time is correct.
  3. Documents & Tools:
    • Valid Tax Sticker (2026) & CTPL (Por Ror Bor).
    • Jack, Lug Wrench, and Jumper Cables.
    • Emergency numbers (Police 191, Highway Police 1193).
Conclusion

Spending 30 minutes checking these 20 points can save you hours of waiting for a tow truck. Safety is the best gift you can give your family this New Year.
