BYD, the leading Chinese automaker, continues its expansion in Japan after successfully launching several models such as the Dolphin, SEAL, Yuan PLUS (known as ATTO 3 in Thailand), and the recently introduced Sealion 7 in April 2025.

Now, BYD is set to enter a new market segment — the popular Japanese K-Car category — with the debut of the BYD Racco, the brand’s first K-Car, unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. This compact electric vehicle features a fully electric powertrain with a driving range of up to 180 km per charge (WLTC). Pre-orders are expected to begin in the summer of 2026, with official sales to follow shortly thereafter.

Compact Design Tailored for Japan

The BYD Racco showcases a boxy, urban-friendly silhouette, echoing the iconic design of Japan’s K-Cars. The closed front grille gives it a sleek EV appearance, while dual-layer daytime running lights (DRLs) integrate turn signals for a modern touch. A two-tone body design emphasizes a floating roof effect, achieved by painting the A- to C-pillars black.

Both rear doors are sliding types, with tracks positioned above the rear wheel arches for a smooth and practical entry. The front doors open conventionally, and the car features privacy glass, 15-inch alloy wheels, and four-wheel disc brakes for added comfort and safety.

At the rear, the vehicle sports a full-width LED taillight bar with illuminated BYD branding and a roof-mounted rear spoiler, adding to its sporty character.

Size and Battery Specifications

The BYD Racco measures 3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide, and 1,800 mm tall — dimensions that comply with Japan’s K-Car regulations. It’s powered by a 20 kWh battery, delivering up to 180 km of range (WLTC) and supporting DC fast charging up to 100 kW.

Interior and Safety

While BYD has yet to reveal interior photos, it is expected that the cabin will feature smart infotainment, digital controls, and high-quality materials, consistent with the brand’s reputation. Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are also expected to be included to enhance safety.

Pricing and Market Outlook

The BYD Racco is projected to start at around 2.6 million yen (approximately 553,000 baht). With its affordable pricing and eco-friendly design, the model will directly compete with Japan’s top-selling Kei EVs, including the Honda N-Box, Suzuki Spacia, Mitsubishi eK X EV, and Nissan Sakura.

Given BYD’s growing success in Asia, there’s also speculation that this small electric vehicle could eventually reach markets like Thailand, where compact EVs are gaining popularity.
